About the Drum Circle

The Nokomis Drum Circle is one of Sarasota County's most iconic community gatherings. Every Wednesday and Saturday evening, as the sun dips toward the Gulf, a crowd assembles at Nokomis Public Beach for a night of music, dancing, and community.

What started as a small group of local drummers around the year 2000 has grown into a vibrant weekly event drawing hundreds of participants and spectators. Drummers of all skill levels form a large circle near the shoreline, creating rhythms on djembes, congas, bongos, and hand drums. You don't need to bring a drum to participate — many people simply come to dance, watch the sunset, or soak in the atmosphere.

As the sky darkens, you'll often see flow artists with LED props, hoops, and poi joining in around the circle. The energy is welcoming and inclusive — everyone from toddlers to retirees can be found dancing in the sand.

The drum circle typically begins about an hour before sunset and continues well past dark. There's no formal organization or admission — it's a true grassroots community event that has been going strong for over 25 years.

Parking & Directions

The drum circle takes place right at Nokomis Public Beach, next to the main parking lot.

The main lot is free but holds only about 100 cars. It fills up quickly on drum circle evenings, so plan to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before sunset if you want to guarantee a spot.

If the main lot is full, don't worry because there's additional free parking nearby.

  • Bring a blanket or chairs. There's no seating in the drum circle area, so come prepared if you want to sit.
